With the summer having finally given us a break for the cooler temperatures of autumn, it’s time to start thinking about preparing your home for fall pests. Here are our top tips to keep bugs out of your home this fall and winter.
#1: Fix Entry Points
If you have doors or windows with damaged screens, it’s time to get out there and replace them. Spiders and other insects like to hang out in door jambs and window sills — not a pleasant surprise when opening a window to enjoy the beautiful fall breeze! Additionally, if you have holes or cracks in those doors or windows, or any other places around your home, seal them up with caulk and or sealant to prevent critters from finding their way inside. If your roof has seen better days, it’s a good time to make repairs to both keep pests out and get prepared for any fall and winter precipitation. Same goes for getting the debris out of your gutters and making sure they’re sturdy and ready to properly drain.
#2: Declutter and Tidy Storage Areas
Insects aren’t big fans of wide open spaces, but they do like to hide places where you store your things, both indoors and outdoors. Keep your storage areas tidy, and get rid of any unused clutter that gives them places to hide, since they’re big fans of low-traffic areas. It’s a good time to rearrange storage bins, boxes, trash cans, etc., and to sweep and dust to keep them on their toes and moving out of your home’s storage areas.
